Populous reveals the design of the new Milan stadium

AC Milan and FC Internazionale Milano football clubs will have a new stadium designed by architectural firm Populous. “The Cathedral” is inspired by the architectural monuments of the city – the Duomo di Milano and the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele – while incorporating technological and material innovation to create a carbon neutral structure. The project, which replaces the Giuseppe Meazza stadium, also known as San Siro, aims to revitalize a key urban area of Milan into a district dedicated to sports and leisure.

The Municipality of Milan has initiated the reconfiguration of the San Siro district into a pedestrian area, 40% of its area of which is occupied by green spaces. As a result, the two football clubs have speeded up the selection process for the design of their new stadium. The new 60,000-seat venue will be enveloped in a foyer-like space surrounded by a glass facade inspired by the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The structure will offer noise control solutions and exemplary safety measures while providing the city with a new green space of over 55,000 m².

Our design envisions the stadium as the most sustainable in Europe and the focal point of a new sports and entertainment district for Milan that will be alive all year round. Supported by the history and traditions of these two great clubs, it will not only provide an incredible sports arena to watch football, but will revitalize the entire region to better serve the citizens, visitors, fans and their families of Milan. – Declan Sharkey, Senior Director and General Manager, Populous Italia
